olon and rectal cancer are largely preventable with the use of several screening techniques. In general, men and women age 50 and older should get regular screenings or tests for colorectal cancer. If you have a family history or other risk factors for colorectal polyps or cancer, talk to your doctor about screening at a younger age or more frequently.
Common screenings and tests include:
- Colonoscopy. This painless test checks the entire colon with a thin, lighted tube.
- Digital rectal exam. In this test, a doctor feels the rectum for abnormalities.
- Fecal occult blood test (FOBT). This test is used to detect hidden blood in stool (feces).
- Sigmoidoscopy. This test checks the lower part of the colon with a thin, lighted tube.
Ask your doctor about the tests and screenings that are right for you. Or for more information, please contact us.
